Primer on Orchid Culture

Orchids are Mother Nature’s long-lasting alternative to cut flowers to cheer indoor settings all year long! Through presentation and discussion of orchids, we will dispel the myths and encourage confidence in the novice that growing orchids in your home can be an easy and very rewarding endeavor.

This class covers general orchid culture of a variety of commercially grown and available orchid genera including: phalaenopsis (the “Moth Orchid;”, paphiopedilum (the “Lady Slipper”), dendrobium (“the Spray Orchid”), Cattleya (the “Corsage Orchid”), cymbidium (the “Boat Orchid”), miltonia (the “Pansy Orchid”) and plants within the Oncidiium and Odontglossum alliances.

We will discuss orchid culture in some depth for each of the genera, including temperature, water, light, nutrients, growing medium, ventilation and a bit on pests. We will also touch on related topics including repotting, propagating and purchasing orchids. Class members are encouraged to ask questions and to bring their own orchids if they have concerns about their health.

WINTER LECTURE SERIES

The Hudson Valley Garden Association is excited to host it's first educational event, Winter Lecture Series 2013. We’ve scheduled dynamic duos of speakers to present once a month, January-March, on a variety of complementary topics. Come for one class or stay for both, just be sure to register early because seating is limited.
